Today is the day... the day all mothers who leave their children in the care of others dread.
The day that it becomes apparent that your child loves the nanny more than you.
Today, upon his triumphant return from an all day play-date, I reached out for Bean from my cozy, ergonomically correct home office desk chair. I just wanted a little hug, maybe, dare I say it... a kiss (or his best approximation thereof). He recoiled in abject disgust. and. started. screaming. and. grabbing. at. the. nanny. as. if. to. say...
"OH GOD NO!" (for those of you who remember the visit with the in-laws... eerily similar look)
My first reaction was to rip my child from her arms, forcing my love down his throat, and to quickly dismiss her with the efficiency of a turn-of-the-century English matriarch.
However, calmer heads prevailed... specifically the nanny's. She gently placed him on the floor, rubbed his back, smiled at me, and walked away. I got down on the floor with him and after about 2 minutes of play, I got my kiss. I returned her charge and went to the bathroom to get control of myself.
Damn, she is good. I think it is safe to say that he (or we, as the case may be) is/are in good hands.
Welcome to the club! Bittersweet, isn't it? On the one hand, we're glad that the Peanut loves the nanny so much. On the other hand? It fucking kills us inside!

Man, that must have sucked. But it also shows what a great judge of character you are for picking out a fabulous caretaker.

Hope you don't mind me commenting. I was just reading through your posts. Found you through Blogging Baby. My daughter is 16 months and did this for the first time Halloween night - with her Nana. She actually CRIED when I tried to take her from Nana and put her in her carseat. The ride home was spent explaining my sobs to my husband. They just don't get it.
